BC residents are moving away as life in the province becomes too expensive

Statistics Canada data is showing that people are moving away from BC.

  • 55,000 people moved out of British Columbia (B.C.) to other provinces between 2021 and 2022.

  • The majority of these migrants (over 50%) went to Alberta, and the next highest number went to Ontario (13,000).

  • Affordability is a driving factor for many residents leaving B.C.

  • Some residents have moved out of B.C. due to high housing costs, with some paying $1,800 a month or more in B.C. and $1,300 a month or less in other provinces.

  • A recent Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CHMC) report showed a rising vacancy rate in 2022, but advocates say there is still a deeper problem of a housing shortage in B.C.

  • Advocates argue that non-profit, government, and social housing is necessary to address the housing shortage and provide affordable homes for people with low incomes, as the market will not create these homes.

There’s just a housing shortage and I think you have to take into account that the market is not going to create really cheap, low, affordable homes that are affordable to people with low incomes, that has to be non-profit homes, government housing, social housing.
